4 mile – Fitzgerald River

After spending a few days at Wave Rock, we headed down to Hopetoun Free Camp. The spacious park area and well-maintained facilities made our stay comfortable and enjoyable. One of the highlights for us was the local playground, where our kids could run around and play while we relaxed and made good use of the bbq facilities.

The landscape around Hopetoun was interesting. We were captivated by the rugged coastal cliffs and the long beaches. We were fascinated by the unique rock formations and historic railway jetty.

The rail line between Ravensthorpe and Hopetoun was constructed in the early 1900s as part of the Western Australian government’s efforts to improve transportation infrastructure in the region. The line was primarily used for transporting wheat, which was a major agricultural product in the area.

The construction of the rail line was a major undertaking, as the terrain was rugged and difficult to navigate. The line included several steep inclines and curves, as well as a number of bridges and tunnels.

Despite the challenges, the rail line played an important role in the development of the region. It allowed farmers to transport their crops to market more efficiently, and it also helped to connect the towns of Ravensthorpe and Hopetoun with other areas of Western Australia.

Over time, the demand for rail transportation declined, and the line was eventually decommissioned in the 1970s. Today, much of the rail infrastructure has been dismantled, but some remnants of the line can still be seen in the landscape, including old rail bridges and tunnels.

4 Mile Campground was an absolute treat for us. We were blown away by the natural beauty of the Fitzgerald River National Park. The dense forests, stunning coastline, and variety of outdoor activities available were truly awe-inspiring. We hiked through several of the park’s trails, which offered breathtaking views of the surrounding areas. It was a special experience to see so many rare and endangered plant and animal species in one location, including the elusive numbat.

The facilities at four mile were amazing. We had a great camp kitchen within metres of our site which we spent plenty of time at for dinner each night.

Overall, our experience at 4 Mile Campground was truly unforgettable. For me it is my favourite place yet! I enjoy climbing a mountain peak as much if not more than a beautiful beach. To have them both side by side was simply heaven. I think the whole family would agree this place defines the opportunity for us to slow down and enjoy life together. We are simply in awe of the natural beauty of Western Australia.
